ABOUT THIS MONTH’S AUTHORS:

SHANE NEILSON is the editor of Frog Hollow Press. He published Meniscus, his first trade book of poems, with Biblioasis this year. He is very proud of an anthology he edited and just released, Approaches to Poetry, a book containing essays by twenty-seven poets.

JIM JOHNSTONE holds an MSc in Reproductive Physiology from The University of Toronto. He is the recipient of a 2008 CBC Literary Award and the EJ Pratt Medal and Prize in Poetry, and his work was recently anthologized in Approaches to Poetry: The Pre-Poem Moment (Frog Hollow Press, 2009). Guernica Editions published his first full-length collection of poetry, The Velocity of Escape, in 2008.

NYLA MATUK’S short fiction and essays have appeared in the literary journals Event, Room of One’s Own, Descant and twice in the Alphabet City anthologies. She has also contributed journalism on architecture and literary topics as a freelancer to the Globe and Mail, Toronto Life and other magazines. Her poems appear on the Greenboathouse Books Archive of poets online, and a first book of poems, Oneiric, was published in 2009 by Frog Hollow Press.

MATT LESLIE lives in Toronto and does stuff during the day and night to make that stuff called money. He’s a writer. His play “Black Swan” was produced as part of NB Acts in Fredericton in 2007, and his fiction can be seen in Qwerty and soon in Misunderstandings. Thanks Jim. His first novel “Slanted and Enchanted” is in people’s hands right this very instant. Whether or not they care enough to publish it is just one of several questions that keeps Matt awake during the day and night.

ERIN SHIELDS is an actor and playwright who trained at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in London, England. She is a founding member of Groundwater Productions and her most recent play, If We Were Birds premiered at the Summerworks Festival in 2008 and received award for Outstanding Production. If We Were Birds will be produced by the Tarragon Theatre in 2010. Other creations include Dance of the Red Skirts (Theatre Columbus), Fewer Emergencies (MITCH), The Unfortunate Misadventures of Masha Galinski (Dora Nominated, Uno Festival, FemFest, Groundswell, Groundwater), Goblin Market (Dora Nominated, Groundwater/Belltower), Ubu Roi (Groundwater) and Connect the Dots (Small Wooden Shoe/Buddies).

NOLAN NATASHA’s solo debut album is entitled Beginner’s Luck. The transgender Toronto MC is the former front-man of queer punk band Scandalnavia. Nolan branched out on his own in order to find an outlet for the intensely personal subject matter, layed back flow and refreshingly minimal beats that would eventually make up Beginner’s Luck. The album is the product of a meticulously honed knack for lyricism, a finely tuned ear for rhythm and the ability to take on the most serious topics with cutting humour and clever insight.

  1. How did the reading go, lads and lasses?
Good to see that ol’ Matt Leslie still has ink-stained hands.
